Talent Management: HR’s Strategic Deliverable

The strategic deliverable for HR is talent - ensuring that the organization has the workforce it needs to effectively implement its business strategy and achieve its mission, vision and key objectives1. Everything else that HR does supports this deliverable.

Senior leadership needs to be actively involved in talent management and succession planning but it cannot be done without your partnership, expertise and leadership. Even with a crystal clear picture of where the company is headed, senior leaders don’t necessarily know which kinds of talent and talent processes will take them there.

Let’s face it: they are probably also unaware of how people within the company actually experience their own leadership. To help leaders at all levels in the company, HR departments need to develop and manage their own people as well as looking after the rest of the organization. To enable this, you need sharp business acumen to deliver solutions that are an appropriate fit for your company. One way of doing this is to provide business skills training to HR staff or in larger companies, getting HR managers assigned to a particular business unit or company division so as to pick up business knowledge as they work.
